Tom Tom Data

Request ID: FOI-1765-1718
Date published: 30 November 2017

You asked

I am part of the TomTom Traffic & Travel sourcing team, with the aim of sourcing of different types of data for our real-time traffic products. My current focus is on data relating to Dynamic Speed Limits (DSL) and it is my understanding that TomTom currently receives some incident data from Transport for London. I am interested as to whether TfL would also be able to supply DSL data and I would be very grateful if you could put me in touch with the correct contact. My initial understanding of how the process would work is that TomTom would request, on a minutely basis, the current value of all Dynamic Speed Limit signs (Dot Matrix) for all segments in a particular country/region. In response, we would like to receive back: - Locations (coordinates or OpenLR) of affected segments - Displayed value of the sign, preferably per lane (as a minimum the allowed speeds, but also closed lane, roadworks ahead, lane merge, etc.) - The time at which the information was retrieved from the source - The time that this information was created by the supplier (if not the same as source)

We answered

Thank you for your email received by us on 28 September 2017 asking for information about Dynamic Speed Limits (DSL) data.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked for:
- Locations (coordinates or OpenLR) of affected segments
- Displayed value of the sign, preferably per lane (as a minimum the allowed speeds, but also closed lane, roadworks ahead, lane merge, etc.)
- The time at which the information was retrieved from the source
- The time that this information was created by the supplier (if not the same as source)
We have a limited number of matrix signs on limited sections of the Transport for London Road network. (TLRN). These signs are set by the London Streets Tunnels Operation Centre during incidents or events on the network. At present we do not have this data in a publishable format in real time.

We are aware that this data is of interest to developers and providers like yourselves and there is some work being done to obtain this data in a format that could be used for this purpose but there are no immediate plans to make this data available.

Once this information is available in a publishable format Transport for London would aim to make it available as open data along with details of lane closures, roadworks and speed restrictions.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
