We answered

Our ref: FOI-1752-2021

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 1 December 2020 asking for information about Santander Cycles.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and our Information Access Policy. I can confirm we do hold some of the information you requested. You asked for:

  1. Total number of Santander Cycles that have been stolen or gone missing between 01/01/2016 and 01/12/2020

Year

Cycles missing

2016

1

2017

3

2018

16

2019

33

2020

145

To clarify the breakdown is the number of cycles reported stolen that are still missing.

Essentially cycles which are lost in 2016 have had 4 years to be returned to the scheme and therefore do not count under the stolen category. Some of the 145 cycles categorised as stolen in 2020 might have only been recorded in the last month and therefore are more likely to be recoverable. This is why the volume appears to increase over time.

  1. How much (in GBP) that Transport for London have spent on repairs of Santander Cycles between 01/01/2016 and 01/12/2020

Unfortunately this information is not available. All repairs and bike services are included in the overall periodic service fee paid to the cycle management supplier (Serco). All bikes receive a full service at least once a year and a full service if they are returned to depot following a red button press by a customer.

  1. How much (in GBP) that Transport for London have spent on buying new replacements of Santander Cycles between 01/01/2016 and 01/12/2020

Year

Value of replacement bikes added to the scheme

2016

£581,043

2017

£421,581

2018

£317,502

2019

£917,647

2020

£1,127,913

The increase in amounts spent on new bikes for the scheme represents stolen bike replacement and replacing bikes that are no longer repairable. The increase is in line with the increase in stolen bikes and that many bikes are now 10 years old.

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity.
