Thank you for your request received on 10 September 2019 asking for information about Santander cyles.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our Information Access Policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you requested. You asked for:

-The number of TfL hire bicycles that have gone missing year-on-year for the past four financial years

-The amount of fines issued to customers for the losses

The table below shows the information you requested:

The current cost of a Santander Cycles bike is £1,098.09.

On average 95% of lost bikes return to the scheme. This number of bikes returning to the scheme increases over time, hence why the percentage of bikes lost in 2015-16 is less than in 2018-19. (We would expect the number of bikes currently missing in 2018-19 to come down considerably over time. The figures for this FOI request are baselined from September 2019).

It should also be noted that bikes do not get replaced until they have been lost for more than three months.

Some bikes are reported as stolen by the customers but unless they are reported as stolen we are not notified as to why a bike is missing.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,
