Request ID: FOI-1723-2021
Date published: 09 December 2020

You asked

Can you specify the make and model of hydrogen buses for these routes? Can you release the specification and graphic standards for the upcoming double-deck hydrogen buses. What is the total cost of the project? Can you provide more details of your current and future plans of the hydrogen bus rollout?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-1723-2021

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 30 November 2020.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked:

Which routes are converting to double-deck hydrogen buses and when are they expected to enter passenger service?

We do not hold this information. We have yet to allocate the buses to a route. All buses are expected to enter a full service during summer 2021, after a period of testing, training and commissioning.

Which operator will be using double-deck hydrogen buses?

The operator Metroline will operate the buses from its Perivale bus garage where the hydrogen infrastructure will be in place.

Can you specify the make and model of hydrogen buses for these routes?

The buses are being built by Wrightbus based in Northern Ireland. They are Streetdeck H2 10.9m double deck buses.

Can you release the specification and graphic standards for the upcoming double-deck hydrogen buses.

We do not hold this information. The blueprints of the buses are the intellectual property of Wrightbus and the graphic standards have not yet been confirmed.

What is the total cost of the project?

TfL is investing £12m in the new buses and the fuelling infrastructure. More than £5 million of funding is being provided by European bodies and £1 million by the Office of Low Emission Vehicles.

Can you provide more details of your current and future plans of the hydrogen bus rollout?

Firstly, we need to see how these different technologies and the supporting infrastructure that is required develop. In the case of hydrogen, we also need to see how cleanly and cheaply this type of energy might be produced in future. We are keeping our options open so we can move forward with the best technologies as they develop.
