TfL Ref: FOI-1667-2122
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 29th October 2021 asking for information about the expanded ULEZ.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“As three days have elapsed since the first day of operation of the extended Ultra Low Emission Zone, the deadline for payments, could you please tell me how many vehicles have paid the daily charge for driving within the zone on Monday 25 October?”
I can confirm that we hold the information you require.
Toxic air pollution is the biggest environmental risk to Londoners' health, and traffic emissions are the biggest source of toxic air in London.
Toxic air pollution increases risk of heart and lung disease, worsens chronic illnesses such as asthma, and puts children's health at risk. It's not just a central London problem. Many areas across the city are exceeding the legal limits for pollution.
On 25 October the ULEZ was expanded to cover the area up to, but not including, the north and south circular roads with the aim of reducing harmful Nitrogen Dioxide by around 30% across London.
We received 50,720 ULEZ charge payments for travel into the ULEZ on 25 October. This is for travel within the entire zone and not just the extended area.
