Does your TFL emergency response unit carry thermite welding for fixing rails or is there a separate unit that does that?

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 20 August 2024 asking for information about thermite welding on rails.

 

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. 

 

I can confirm that we do hold the information you require. The Emergency Response Unit (ERU) do not have the capability to weld repair using Aluminothermic welding, or any other welding process. The ERU would plate any length or rail installed during an emergency for welding at a later date.
