Our Ref:         FOI-1659-2324

Thank you for your request received on 21 August 2023 asking for information about crime on the London Underground.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require. You asked:

•           Could you please provide a list of total crimes committed on each tube line (excluding the Elizabeth line) last calendar year. Could you please break this down into type of crime committed and date of crime?
•           Could you also provide a list of total crimes committed on each tube line individually in 2019 and 2022?

Our transport network is a safe, low crime network - millions of passengers travel on our network every day with very few of them ever experiencing or witnessing crime. Everyone has the right to work or travel without fear of abuse or intimidation and if anyone witnesses or is victim to crime, they should report it immediately.

A specialist unit within TfL works with both the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and British Transport Police (BTP) police services. Measures to keep everyone safe on the network include more than 2,500 police and police community support officers and 500 TfL enforcement officers on patrol, along with thousands of frontline transport workers, on the network at all times of the day to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour, alongside operations to target offenders. TfL invests more than £180m in the MPS and BTP each year, funding dedicated policing on London’s roads and TfL’s transport networks to keep its customers and staff safe.

Please find the requested statistics attached.

To note:
•           The offences were extracted based upon when the crime was committed
•           This is extracted from a dataset from a live British Transport Police (BTP) recorded crime system and provided to TfL, hence similar information extracted later from the BTP may provide different figures. This information may therefore also differ from information supplied through previous FOI requests.
•           Crimes are allocated to a London Underground line based upon TfL organisational structure (e.g., a crime at Oxford Circus station will be allocated to the Bakerloo Line, even though this station serves the Bakerloo, Central and Victoria lines)
•           A split of crime by whether it was recorded as being committed on train (on a tube train), station (anywhere within station infrastructure ranging from the platform to ticket hall) and line/other (e.g., on a track or by side of a tube line track)
•           BTP recorded crime categories are used
•           Q1 spreadsheet reflects the first request (crimes by tube line committed during 2022, broken down by crime type and date)
•           Q2 spreadsheet the second request (total crimes committed on each tube line 2019 and 2022)
