Our ref: FOI-1617-2021/GH
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 15 November 2020 asking for information about London Underground passenger numbers.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.
Please find attached a spreadsheet showing the daily exit and entry data for each London Underground station for the period 19/10/20 – 15/11/20 as requested.
Some entries on the spreadsheet are shown as:
PVALs = Passenger Validators
IVALs = Intermediate Validators
These are both different types of card reader devices, found at some (not all) stations, and due to the way our ticketing system constructs journeys to ensure the correct fare is paid, there’s often times when a ticket tap on one of these devices cannot be accurately designated as an entry or an exit (even though the tap was part of an entry/exit movement within the station), so these are classified in the data as PVAL/IVAL depending on the device that was tapped on. In theory, PVALs and IVALs are entries and exits, we are just unable to determine which here. However, they would contribute to total footfall.
Transport for London continues to provide a clean, safe and reliable network for customers and staff, with extensive cleaning measures introduced at the start of the pandemic and signage, announcements and other measures reminding customers of the need to socially distance and to wear face coverings. Independent testing by Imperial College London has found no traces of coronavirus on the transport network. The Tube network has been running a full, planned service in recent months to provide as much space for social distancing as possible for customers who need to travel.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.
If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
