TfL Ref: FOI-1610-2122

Thank you for your request received by us on 22 October 2021 asking for information about the Euston Road scheme.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

The Euston Road scheme was delivered in July 2020 as a temporary emergency response to the coronavirus pandemic. As the scheme had to be installed at speed due to our pandemic response, it was not possible to carry out a formal public consultation for the scheme last year. However, we offered other ways for the public and other stakeholders to provide feedback on the scheme, including an online feedback platform available at https://haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/euston-road) and a dedicated mailbox [email protected].

As the Euston Road scheme was introduced using a Temporary Traffic Order (TRO) with a maximum 18-month lifespan, we are now considering what our next steps should be. We have been constantly monitoring the data throughout the life of the scheme, including any traffic flow changes, bus journey times, cycling data and the feedback we’ve received from the public and other stakeholders since the scheme was introduced. Once we make a decision about the scheme, we will write to those people who have contacted us about it, and to those stakeholders we think would have an interest, to let them know what we intend to do and what our next steps would be.

We have received a significant amount of feedback on the Euston Rd scheme since its installation last year. We have received a range of opinions and as previously stated, some comments were supportive of the scheme, including:

  • “The installation, along with the lanes on Hampstead Road, has made a huge difference to the safety and convenience of cyclists travelling along the east-west corridor. There is no other east-west route to the north for a mile and the nearest route to the south (in Tavistock Place, 350 metres away) involves a significant detour”.
  • “We believe that it is vital that work resume on the Euston Healthy Streets initiative and that the Mayor move forward with improvements along the Euston Road”.
  • “These lanes were the only good thing to have happened to Euston Road in a long time. The Euston Road has long been congested and polluted. It is host to world-leading institutions and businesses, and has become even more so with major developments such as at King's Cross and, in future, Euston with HS2”.

We continually monitor the scheme and its impact to ensure we maintain a resilient road network.
