TfL Ref: FOI-1608-2122

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 25 October 2021, asking for a list of stations that have short platforms.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked:

I am requesting a full list of all short platforms at, London Underground, London Overground, TFL Rail, Docklands Light Railway, stations. This list should show the platform number that it applies to and details of which doors and which coaches will or will not be opened on trains that call at that platform.

For short platform stations on London Underground please find attached two documents - the Sub-surface lines and the Northern Line. There are no short platforms on the Victoria, Piccadilly, Central, Waterloo and City and Jubilee Lines.

Short platforms at DRL stations include:

  1. Cutty Sark                   (platform 1 & 2)
  2. Elverson Road            (platform 1 & 2)
  3. Royal Albert                (platform 1 & 2)
  4. Gallions Reach           (platform 1 & 2)

The above short platform stations are known as selective door opening (SDO) stations, which prevent the doors opening at certain platforms.

On arrival at an SDO station, the first two and last two sets of doors on a 3-car train do not enable.  For one or two car trains there is no SDO.

London Overground TfL managed stations with short platforms include :

  1. Canada Water - platforms 3&4 nine sets of doors serviceable and the last set locked out.
  2. Wapping platform - 1 nine sets of doors serviceable and the last set locked out.
  3. Wapping Platform - 2 eight sets of doors serviceable and the last two sets locked out.
  4. Rotherhithe Platforms - 1&2 eight sets of doors serviceable and the last two sets locked out.

Please note all of the London Overground and DLR examples are covered by clear announcements to alert passengers.

For TfL Rail stations, please see the table below;

Paddington Platforms 11 & 12 Rear 6 carriages have centre door locked out Rear 4 carriages have centre door locked out Doors locked out due to platform curvature. Doors locked out on all platforms at Paddington
Maryland All platforms Rear 6 sets of doors locked out (there are 3 sets of doors per carriage) No issues Doors locked out on all platforms at the station

Seven Kings All platforms Rear 5 sets of doors locked out (there are 3 sets of doors per carriage) No issues Doors locked out on all platforms at the station

As the SDO system works off GPS, one short platform at a station means that the doors are locked out on all of the platforms at the station.

At Paddington we also have a central door lockout due to platform curvature on some platforms, which means that the centre doors of some carriages will not open on all of the platforms at the station.

There are no restrictions on Class 315s at Maryland, Forest Gate and Manor Park.
