Our Ref: FOI-1600-2122
Thank you for your request received on 24 October 2021 asking for information about Zero Emission Capable (ZEC) Range Extender vehicles.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
You asked:
What studies have you done to analyse what % of time or distance, or any other similar measure, the ZEC Range Extender vehicles operate in pure electric mode?
To be licensed as a London taxi, a vehicle is required to meet specific licensing requirements and Conditions of Fitness.
In the case of zero emission capable (ZEC) taxis, the vehicle must also meet certain emissions criteria, specifically:
Since 1 January 2018, taxis presented for licensing for the first time have needed to be ZEC.
This means having CO2 emissions of no more than 50g/km and a minimum 30 mile zero emission range. ZEC taxis with petrol engines need to meet the latest emissions standard (currently Euro 6).
The London Electric Vehicle Company TXe and the Nissan Dynamo vehicle have satisfied our licensing requirements for a ZEC taxi.
We do not hold information on the amount of time or distance taxis travel in pure electric mode. This is a matter for the London Electric Vehicle Company and Dynamo, the vehicle manufacturers, so any research will likely have been carried out by them.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
