We answered

Dear

TfL Ref: FOI-1588-1819

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 12 September 2018.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked:

  1. How many suburban style taxis does TfL license.

There are two different types of London taxi drivers, all London (green badge) drivers who can ply for hire anywhere in the Greater London Authority area and suburban (yellow badge) drivers who can ply for hire in one of the nine sectors in the suburbs of the Greater London Authority area. Please see our website for further details: www.tfl.gov.uk/info-for/taxis-and-private-hire/licensing/learn-the-knowledge-of-london.

Licensed taxi vehicles can be used by taxi drivers holding either badge provided they clearly display the type of licence they hold on the windscreen and rear window of the taxi.

We regularly publish the number of taxi vehicles we have licensed, along with other licensing information, on our website: www.tfl.gov.uk/info-for/taxis-and-private-hire/licensing/licensing-information.

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere.

  2. How many suburban style taxi drivers does TfL license?

This information is also available on our website; please follow the link provided above.

  3. What is the Oldest Hackney carriage registered with TfL?

We are doing a number of things to reduce emissions from the taxi fleet and deliver the Mayor’s vision of the greenest taxi fleet in the world. Further information can be found here: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone/cleaner-greener-taxis

Since 1 January 2018 all taxis presented for licensing for the first time must be zero emission capable. This requirement sits alongside a 15 year maximum age limit for taxis. There are exemptions to the age limit requirement that, in a limited number of scenarios, allow a vehicle to be licensed for longer. The oldest licensed taxi is 20 years old and has been granted a 5 year licence extension as it has been converted to operate on a cleaner, less polluting Liquid Petroleum Gas system.

  4. What is the oldest private hire registered with TfL?

From 1 January 2012 a 10 year rolling age limit was introduced for private hire vehicles. There are a limited number of exemptions from the age-based limits which have been consulted upon and approved. Find out more about the exemptions on our website: www.tfl.gov.uk/info-for/taxis-and-private-hire/licensing/private-hire-vehicle-licence. The oldest licensed private hire vehicle in London is 47 years old and has been granted an exemption as it is a classic/niche car. These are typically vehicles offering specialised services and are unlikely to be used in central London for long periods of time or very frequently.
