Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked:
Please tell me the maximum legal noise limit for the fan within the ventilation shaft for the Victoria Line in Rita Road, Lambeth.(as heard from the adjacent street).
There is no UK statutory noise limit for acceptable noise levels. It’s the responsibility of the local authority (in this case Lambeth Council) to decide whether any reported noise is a “nuisance” under Section 80 of the Environmental Protection Act.
How is the noise level monitored?
We started monitoring the noise from the shaft in April 2018 in response to a noise complaint. Long term monitoring of the noise from the vent shaft has been requested to establish whether the noise from the vest shaft increases over time between the cleaning of the shaft. The monitoring method we use amounts to recording for 5 minutes, at a time when the area is quiet, and every two months.
Has it exceeded the statutory limit?
There is no statutory noise limit. However, the noise levels do not currently meet Lambeth Council’s environmental noise policy.
