Hello,
Does TfL measure peak time (or any other time) occupancy on London Underground trains. For example 50% occupancy on Victoria Line between X and Y stations or something to this effect. If TfL does measure occupancy on LU trains at times, could you please attach the latest data.
We answered
TfL Ref: FOI-1531-2324
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 9th August 2023 asking for information about occupancy on London Underground services.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“Does TfL measure peak time (or any other time) occupancy on London Underground trains. For example 50% occupancy on Victoria Line between X and Y stations or something to this effect. If TfL does measure occupancy on LU trains at times, could you please attach the latest data.”
I can confirm that we hold the information you require, which is provided in the attached spreadsheet. This data represents a typical 2022 autumn Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday (the time of year and days of the week when demand is steady and highest). Train occupancy is shown as a % for every quarter-hour for every link on the TfL network (excluding Trams). 100% occupancy is defined as 4 passengers / square meter, so it is possible for occupancy to exceed 100% when crowding is particularly dense.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely,
