Thank you for your request received on 21 August 2019 asking for information about the electrical substation in Chiswick.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our Information Access Policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you requested. You asked:

Hardwicke Road, Chiswick electricity sub station

Is the electricity sub station on Hardwicke Road W4 operated by or on behalf of London Underground and is the sub station still active?

What is it’s current capacity / activity?

Are there any Electromagnetic Field (EMF) readings from within the substation or in the nearby vicinity?

Are there any plans to decommission or expand the substation?

The electrical substation in Hardwicke Road, Chiswick, is an active electrical substation owned and operated by London Underground and supplies power to the District and Piccadilly Underground lines. 24 hour access for maintenance and fault response is maintained for the substation equipment. The installed capacity of the electrical substation is 7.5 mega volt amps (MVA) of traction load and 1MVA of non-traction load which provides power to the railway.

Studies have been carried out at sample London Underground electrical substations with similar equipment which demonstrate that the levels of electromagnetic fields (EMF) in and around electrical substations are fully compliant with the requirements of the Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016. This gives assurance that the Exposure Limit Values (ELV) within these Regulations are not exceeded in any area accessible to the general public, that is external to the electrical substation building.

Some of the internal substation equipment was recently upgraded as part of the work to introduce new trains on the District Line, and there are plans to replace and upgrade more substation equipment as part of the introduction of new trains on the Piccadilly Line over the next few years.
