FOI request detail

Origin-destination tube data

Request ID: FOI-1513-2425
Date published: 19 August 2024

You asked

Please can you provide data on the number of journeys between all pairs of origin and destination tube stations in 2023. You previously provided something similar for 2021, here: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/transparency/freedom-of-information/foi-request-detail?referenceId=FOI-1762-2223 Please could the following changes be made? • Bring it up to date by providing data for 2023 (The number of Tube journeys has recovered a lot since 2021, so 2021 figures no longer provide an accurate picture of movements on the network). • Include all pairings where the journey would be charged based upon the zone the station was in. Therefore, to also include the London Overground and any other stops on lines where the zone would determine the price. • I think the data linked above only included those who used Oyster cards. However, I assume you also hold origin-destination data where people have used contactless bank cards, their phones, and paper tickets. Please can you include these in the overall figures as well to give the best representation of the total trips between the stations.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-1513-2425

Thank you for your request which we received on 8 August 2024, asking for data on the number of journeys between all pairs of origin and destination tube stations in 2023.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

I can confirm that we hold the information you require, which is provided in the attached spreadsheet. It shows all complete rail journeys for 2023 as requested, including contactless and Oyster taps. Paper tickets aren’t recorded.

Please note that any station with daily taps of less than 5 have been removed as this could be considered personal information and is therefore exempt under section 40(2) of the FOI Act. This is because disclosure of this personal data would be a breach of the legislation, specifically the first principle of Article 5 of the UK General Data Protection Regulation which requires all processing of personal data to be fair and lawful. It would not be fair to disclose this personal information when the individuals have no expectation it would be disclosed and TfL has not satisfied one of the conditions which would make the processing ‘fair’.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
