We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-1502-2021

Thank you for your request of 2nd November 2020 asking for information about bus route 383.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Your questions are answered in turn below:

Can you release the documentation of route branding graphic standards used for route 383?

The designs for the 383 were mainly undertaken by the operator, Uno, and any third party agency it might have used. TfL did not provide documentation of route branding graphic standards to the supplier. However, the attached document shows the proposal from the operator which includes diagrams of the outside of the vehicle as well as some other details about the branding exercise which may be of interest to you. Material has been redacted where it is commercially sensitive and outside the scope of your request.

How much did TfL pay to adopt branding for route 383?

The cost of the revised branding for the recent extension was covered by Uno and TfL. TfL agreed to contribute around £35,000, which was spent on promotional activities following analysis that showed that the 383 was seen as a local route that served the community. This included the analysis, line diagrams inside the buses, revised details on the outside of the bus, new upholstery, re-spraying of hand poles and a community event.

What is the purpose of branding route 383?

TfL previously applied route branding to route 383 and updated it to reflect the extension to Finchley Hospital. The original branding aimed to encourage the wider take up of sustainable public transport and the trials were designed to understand the extent to which patronage could be generated by the use of route level and local branding. It was also applied to vehicles and stops in the Barkingside and Hayes (Middlesex) areas in London which had significant population growth and might offer opportunities to increase bus patronage. The branding is being removed from these areas over time as vehicles, e-tiles and timetables are replaced.

Do TfL plan to expand route branding on other bus routes?

The Covid-19 pandemic has meant that our plans for marketing and promoting bus usage have been paused for now.

Can you list London bus services with route branding?

383, X140, 128, 150, 167, 169, 247, 275, 462, 90, 140, 195, 350, 427, 607, A10, E6, H98, U4, U5 and U7.

Do TfL or operators pay to adopt route branding to their bus fleet?

The model varies depending on circumstance. In the case of the 383 the costs were shared between TfL and the operator.
