TfL Ref: FOI-1495-2425
Thank you again for your request which we received on 7 August 2024. You asked if asbestos was present in public areas at Mornington Crescent station.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You specifically asked:
(1) is there an asbestos risk in these publicly accessible areas? (2) Do the publicly accessible areas where there are scrapes, scratches and exposed material contain asbestos, examples shown in the pictures below?
Asbestos surveys have been carried out at all London underground stations including Mornington Crescent. Having reviewed the asbestos information for this station, no asbestos containing materials (ACMs) have been identified in any of the public passageways, as shown in the photographs you submitted. Therefore there is no asbestos risk associated with these damaged areas.
Following on from surveys undertaken at any location, where ACMs are identified, a priority assessment is carried out in line with our Health Safety & Environment (HSE) guidelines. This considers, amongst other things, the level of occupancy of wherever the ACM is located. Asbestos located in public areas such as those in the photographs would have a very high occupancy level and consequently, the potential for disturbance would be high so we would arrange removal as soon as possible after its discovery.
Please see also our published Asbestos Register which shows all occurrences of asbestos, available via this link: https://foi.tfl.gov.uk/FOI-1937-2324/Northern%20line%20Stations%20Asbestos.pdf
With regard to your complaints, I can forward your email onto the customer services so they can update you, or you can follow it up with them directly.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
