• With flow bus lane is defined as a bus lane that runs alongside a traffic lane open to other motorised vehicles and in the same direction of travel.
• Contra flow bus lane is defined as a bus lane alongside a lane open to other motorised vehicles in the opposite direction of travel
• Bus only road is a road that has no lanes open to other motorised vehicles in either direction.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 13 October 2021 asking for information about bus lanes.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require. Transport for London is not a local authority, and the data we have provided is for the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN), the red routes which we are responsible for.
Please see the attached spreadsheet which provides the information we have recorded regarding bus lanes.
We do not hold information on bus lanes which are planned to be created or removed in the next five years in a format which allows us to report on this. In order to search for this information we would need to look at all planned schemes to see whether bus lanes were included in any proposed changes. This work would exceed the ‘appropriate limit’ of £450 set by the Freedom of Information (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004.
Under section 12 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to comply with requests if we estimate that the cost of determining whether we hold the information, locating and retrieving it and extracting it from other information would exceed the appropriate limit. In this instance, we estimate that the time required to answer your request would exceed 18 hours which, at £25 per hour (the rate stipulated by the Regulations), exceeds the ‘appropriate limit’.
It is also important to note that many planned schemes are currently on hold or under review due to lack of revenue due to the pandemic.
