FOI request detail

Junctions

Request ID: FOI-1476-1718
Date published: 10 October 2017

You asked

How many junctions in total are there in London's 14,711km road network? I have found figures of 6,300 traffic light sets, however as part of my research at Cardiff University I am also interested in all junctions (including T-junctions and intersection of minor to major roads that do not have traffic lights).

We answered

Our Ref: FOI-1476-1718

Thank you for your request received on 13 September 2017 asking for information about junctions in London.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

We are responsible for the management of London’s red routes, these form the TfL Road Network (TLRN). The remaining roads in London are maintained by the various London boroughs.

We do not hold information on the number of junctions there are on the TLRN, often these will be junctions with roads maintained by the boroughs. You may wish to contact the Department for Transport as they may hold the information requested.

We are able to provide you with a breakdown of the intersections that have traffic signals on all London roads which might be helpful:

• Signal Total: 5364
o Junctions:        2702
o Dual Pelican:   276
o Dual Puffin:     160
o Dual Toucan:  104
o Pedestrian:      682
o Pelican:           709
o Puffin:             511

Please accept our apologies that we are unable to assist you further on this occasion.

Yours sincerely
