We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-1462-2021

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 28th October 2020 asking for information about passenger numbers on various TfL services.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

Under the freedom of information act, may I request the following data in Excel of PDF format please.

- 2019/2020 Passenger numbers for each station on the Docklands Light Railway network.

- 2019/2020 Passenger numbers for each tram stop on the London Tram network.

- 2019/2020 Passenger numbers for each station on the London Underground network.

- 2019/2020 Passenger numbers for each bus route operated on behalf of TfL.”

I can confirm that we hold the information you require, which is provided in the attached spreadsheets. Please note the following in relation to the three files:

File  19_20 Bus

  • This covers all recorded bus boarding tap transactions in the year 2019/20
  • This only covers bus boardings made using an Oyster or Contactless card. Customers boarding using other ticketing media (such as magnetic/paper tickets, and therefore not validating on the card reader) are not captured here.
  • Data is broken down by bus route, as recorded in the ticketing system

File 19_20 Tram

  • This covers all transactions made at tram stops on the “Passenger Validator” (PVAL) readers. Customers are only required to tap when boarding services, not when alighting.
  • The ticketing system records Oyster entry taps on a PVAL reader as “Entry”, and Contactless taps on a PVAL reader as “PVAL”.
  • Customers who do not tap their ticketing product when boarding services will not be shown in these numbers. That includes customers with valid ticketing products (such as magnetic/paper tickets).

File 19_20 Rail

  • This covers all transactions made at rail stations, as defined in the ticketing system.
  • The TAPS ticketing data warehouse does not have a flag or filter for mode (e.g. London Underground, DLR), so all rail stations have been included here, including London Underground, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail, and National Rail stations accepting Oyster or Contactless card payment.
  • The ticketing system records Oyster entry taps on a PVAL reader as “Entry”, and Contactless taps on a PVAL reader as “PVAL”.
  • Some stations have pink “routing” validators on platforms that customers tap to define their route, ensuring they pay the correct fare. These are designated as “IVAL” in the data.
  • Some stations that allow Out-of-Station Interchanges define entry taps as “IVAL” within the TAPS system; prominent examples of this include Canary Wharf LU and Euston LU.
  • For London Underground stations, data is a combination of Oyster, Contactless, and magnetic tickets. For all non-London Underground stations, we only record Oyster and Contactless taps.
