TfL Ref: 1457-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 3 August 2023 asking for information about bus operators and fare payments on the network.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require.  You asked for:

a list of bus operators in the Greater London Area and of these which bus operators accept payments by swipe function when a passenger gets on a bus. This is not contactless payments.

Costs permitting could you also confirm what each bus company is charged for each transaction when a passenger pays by debit/credit card.

The information you asked for in reference to the list of bus operating companies in the Greater London area is available on our website using the following link: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/buses/who-runs-your-bus

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of some of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere.

TfL services, including the London Buses network accept payment by either Oyster, contactless or mobile device, as explained here: https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/how-to-pay-and-where-to-buy-tickets-and-oyster/pay-as-you-go/contactless-and-mobile-pay-as-you-go?intcmp=55539

We can advise that contract payments are related to the bus mileage operated and overall reliability of the service, as explained in the following document, which provides key features of London Buses’ tendering and contracts system. This document also states that London Buses sets fares and retains the revenue at: https://content.tfl.gov.uk/uploads/forms/lbsl-tendering-and-contracting.pdf

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
