FOI request detail

Tube speeds

Request ID: FOI-1438-1718
Date published: 09 October 2017

You asked

1) Can you please tell me what was the fastest speed achieved on each of the individual tube lines in 2016? For each, can you tell me the date and time of when the fastest time was achieved? 2) Can you also for each individual tube line, please tell me the average speed in 2016? 2) Can you please give me the same data for 2014 and 2015?

We answered

Our ref: FOI-1438-1718/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 12 September 2017 asking for information about the speed on tube lines.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy.

I can confirm that we do not hold the information you require. We do not record the speed of individual tube trains in a way where we can advise you of the fastest speed achieved on each line. Services are not operated to be as fast as possible, but work to a timetable. From a capacity point-of-view, whilst we want faster trains, we also need to run them closer together and consider other factors such as how quickly customer can alight and board a train in a platform, in order to operate the most efficient service.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
