TfL Ref: EIR-1426-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 2nd August 2023 asking for information about the eastbound District and Circle line between Sloane Square and South Kensington.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

Please advise what repair, maintenance or improvement work has been undertaken on the Eastbound District and Circle line tracks between Sloane Square and South Kensington tube stations since 1 October 2022.

Please also highlight which of these interventions has been undertaken with the aim of reducing track noise generated by the trains as they travel from Sloane Square to South Kensington.

Please also include the dates of the interventions.”

I can confirm that we hold the information you require, which is provided in the attached spreadsheet. Note that:

  • you may need to expand the width of some columns to read the data in full;

  • as this is a “twin bore tunnel” (i.e. with both tracks in one tunnel) the noise from a poor conditioned rail joint when a train passes over it on either the West or East bound direction emanates significantly throughout the tunnel. The spreadsheet therefore shows work done on both the Westbound and Eastbound tracks.

  • virtually all of the works shown assist with noise reduction to a degree, but those that were carried out specifically for the purpose of reducing noise are indicated in the spreadsheet.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,

David Wells
