We answered

Our ref: FOI-1423-1819/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 22 August 2018 asking for information about payment statistics.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

As previously, there are some limitations on the data we can access, and some reports concerning payments by cash, card, cheque etc are no longer available.

Also as previously, the focus here is not on transactions (since one transaction could imply one journey, or 40 journeys, etc) but on total journeys and total sales.

The following is an analysis of Pay As You Go journeys on TfL services in the financial year April 2017 – March 2018. The proportion of journeys using a Contactless card or device to pay at station gates, or readers on buses, was about 43% averaged across the year but by the end of the year it was nearer 50%.

Secondly, an analysis gives an indication of the breakdown between cash and card purchases. These are receipts (sales) at Underground stations, including purchases of Travelcards as well as PAYG top-ups, and they will also cover parts of journeys made on National Rail. However, note that receipts from journeys using Contactless cards and mobiles (see above) are excluded.
