TfL Ref: FOI-1420-2223

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 12 September 2022, asking for information about TfL’s advertising contract.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. Specifically you asked:

  1. Is there a company with sole license to place advertisement in the properties you own or street furniture?

Our contracts with our media partners are exclusive. For rail and bus station assets, this contract is with Global. For bus shelters, this is JCDecaux. We also have some smaller contracts with other media partners for other property types and assets.

  1. How long is the contract for or when is it expiring?

The Global contract ends in March 2025 and the JCDecaux contract expires at the end of December 2023. The smaller contracts with other media partners all have various end dates.

  1. Which company has the sole license to place and manage all advertisement in all your properties and street furniture?

As per question 1, these rights would fall under the contracts of the relevant media partner.

  1. Is the license type sole, where no other company can place advertisement on your properties or street furniture?

Our contracts are exclusive so no one else can advertise on our network outside of these contracts.

  1. If we want to obtain a license to place advertisement in your property which department and what are the contact details of the person we need to speak to?

To make a booking for an advertisement please contact the relevant media partner directly. If you would like to become a media partner, please monitor the trade press for upcoming details of tendering opportunities. We also tender opportunities for the upgrading/ installation of new assets.

  1. What was the revenue from advertising for the council in 2020?

Advertising income is included in TfL’s quarterly progress reports which are published on the TfL website: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/quarterly-progress-reports.

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere.

  1. Can we install our own digital advertising screen on your properties / street furniture?

No. We have specific existing contracts with firms to install new advertising assets on our estate. Therefore, any party outside this contract installing their own assets would breach this contract.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
