Historical CO2 emissions data.
Request ID: FOI-1419-1920
Date published: 09 September 2019
You asked
Hi, would it be possible to have historical data (i.e. yearly) regarding the average CO2 emissions per km travelled per mode of transport (car, LGV, HGV, bus/coach, other)? In the event that the other data is not available, would it be possible to have data regarding CO2 emissions specifically for TfLs bus fleet over an extended time period?

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 13 August 2019 asking for information about CO2 emissions.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.
Below are the average road transport CO2 emission rates across London by vehicle type for year 2010, 2013 and 2016, extracted from the latest LAEI (London Atmospheric Emissions Inventory) update, as published by the GLA and TfL in March 2019, and available for download at https://data.london.gov.uk/dataset/london-atmospheric-emissions-inventory--laei--2016.
The data below have been derived from the published total CO2 emissions for London (GLA) reported for these years (in tonnes/year), divided by the associated vehicle.kilometres (VKM) for these years, for each vehicle type reported in the LAEI.

We are working hard to green up our bus fleet. We now have Europe’s largest electric bus fleet and are working to deliver a zero-emission bus network by 2037 at the latest. As well as eliminating harmful NOx emissions, electric buses reduce CO2 emissions by more than 50 per cent.
It should also be considered that a car carries on average 2 people compared to a bus that carries many more – therefore whilst the emissions from a bus are higher as a vehicle, per person buses are more carbon friendly.
