TfL Ref 1314-2021
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 11 October 2020 asking for information about bus lanes on red routes.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. You asked: Could you please advise what the rules are around bus lanes on Red Routes. What constitutes a bus lane and how many different route buses need to use a certain bus lane for TFL to be able to install a bus lane on a Red Route.
Information on bus lanes and operation times is available on our website: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/red-routes/rules-of-red-routes/bus-lanes
There is also published legislation on this, although it isn’t TfL specific which you can access at the following link: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2002/3113/regulation/22/made
There is also a live consultation on our website at the moment regarding bus lanes, which is on the link below: https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/all-day-bus-lanes/
In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere.
We do not hold a prescribed set of rules as such for the number of buses which need to use a bus lane before one is introduced as this would depend on a number of variables and would be site specific, however there are a number of considerations which are taken into account when considering the installation of a bus lane, for example potential bus passenger numbers. There is more information available in our Streetscape guidance which we publish on our website: http://content.tfl.gov.uk/streetscape-guidance-.pdf
If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
