Thank you for your request received on 1 August 2019 asking for information about the Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf Crossing.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You asked for:

The brief provided to the consultant team at the start of design work is attached. The span and impact loadings to be achieved were developed as part of the design work and so were not specified in the brief. A copy of the brief is available online:

Please could TFL provide the span now required by the Port of London Authority, and the impact loading now required by the Port of London Authority for the Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf bridge.

The Port of London Authority (PLA) did not set a requirement for the span. The span is dictated by the width of the ‘Authorised Channel’ in the river which must remain clear of structures, and a 15m buffer to the structure for safety. The most recent design has a main span with a length of 171m, which challenges this buffer. Likewise, the PLA did not set a requirement for the ship impact protection, rather the ship impact loading is calculated to the relevant Eurocode for the observed river traffic. The ship impact protection is designed such that any of the observed ships cannot impact the towers at any tide condition.
