We answered
TfL Ref 1311-2021
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 9 October 2020 asking for information about the Emirates Air Line (EAL).
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.
To date the Emirates Air Line has generated an operating profit due to a combination of its fare income and commercial sponsorship. This operating surplus goes towards paying back the capital cost of the build.
During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, the Emirates Air Line was fully closed for a period, and later provided a service for keyworkers to safely travel to the Nightingale Hospital at ExCeL London, as well as operating free of charge during the morning peak to ease overcrowding at local London Underground stations.
1. How much the Emirates Air Line has collected in fare revenue, each month, from December 2016 to September 2020
See attached spreadsheet. This does not include revenue related to commercial sponsorship for EAL. Due to a financial processing issue, the fare revenue for Period 1 in 2020/2021 is a negative value and relates to when the cable car was closed due to the Government advice to avoid public transport.
2. The operating costs for the Emirates Air Line for each month from December 2016 to September 2020
See attached spreadsheet. This does not include revenue related to commercial sponsorship for EAL
3) The period of time that Emirates has contracted to sponsor the Air Line and when that period will be over, as well as any other sponsorship contracts
In June 2012 Emirates Airline became the title sponsor of the London Cable Car for a 10 year term. There are no other current sponsorship contracts for the London Cable Car.
