Freedom of Information request - Furlough

Request ID: FOI-1302-2021
Date published: 02 November 2020

You asked

Dear Transport for London, Can you please tell me the following: - What's the total number of staff working for TfL on 07/10/2020? - What's the total number of staff who was furloughed at any point since the scheme started? - What's the total number of staff currently on furlough? - What's the total cost of topping up furloughed staff wages until 07/10/2020? - What's the total number of staff who have been continuously on furlough since the scheme started? - Would you consider making staff in this last group redundant to make savings, as clearly, if their work has not been required for over 6 months, what's the point of bringing them back and spend funds on their wages when their services are not required?

We answered

Our ref: FOI-1302-2021/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 7 October 2020 asking for information about Furlough.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

What's the total number of staff working for TfL on 07/10/2020? 27,326

 - What's the total number of staff who was furloughed at any point since the scheme started? 7414

 - What's the total number of staff currently on furlough? 1380

 - What's the total cost of topping up furloughed staff wages until 07/10/2020?

TfL was told by the Government on the 20 April that it was eligible for the furlough scheme. Given the lack of certainty on funding and despite continuing to operate services for critical workers, TfL announced furlough of 25 per cent of its workforce, over 7000 since the scheme was announced. The speed in which this decision was taken was critical to preventing further cash depletion. This will have saved TfL around £41 million to the end of July. TfL estimates the total cost of topping up salaries to 100 per cent is just under £26m over the same period.

 - What's the total number of staff who have been continuously on furlough since the scheme started?

879 people have been on Furlough since the beginning of the scheme.

 - Would you consider making staff in this last group redundant to make savings, as clearly, if their work has not been required for over 6 months, what's the point of bringing them back and spend funds on their wages when their services are not required?

Under the Freedom of Information Act, TfL is not obliged to answer questions which are the opinions rather than a request for recorded information.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

 Yours sincerely
