FOI request detail

how many days of trade union representative release

Request ID: FOI-1299-1819
Date published: 06 September 2018

You asked

Please provide data on how many days of trade union representative release have been allowed for representatives within the Directorate of Network Operations of London Underground Limited in the last 12 months, though if it is easier to do a calendar year then please provide 2017. The request is for all representatives, both health and safety and industrial, permanently released and not, and for all stations, drivers and control roles. I know that the "SAP" back office system you use makes it very quick for an administrator to run this report on individual representatives, so please do not deflect with a "too much time" excuse. Finally, please provide the number of representatives the data cover.

Over 2017 we recognised 421 employees as Trade Union representatives. In total, these employees requested to be released from work on 16,215 occasions.  Their release covered negotiations and consultation activities, health and safety and learning matters as well as supporting employees on individual issues.

We recognise seven trade unions for the purposes of collective bargaining: ASLEF, PCS, Prospect, RMT, TSSA, Unite the Union and Unison. We worked with the unions throughout the year and always strive to have a constructive and professional relationship, recognising the vital role they play within the organisation at all levels. This includes negotiations and consultation activities, as well as supporting their members on individual issues.

Our unions continue to make a valuable contribution to the health, safety and wellbeing of our staff, with union health and safety representatives throughout the company. Representatives also play an active role in equality and learning matters.
