Requirements to become a tube driver

Request ID: FOI-1265-2425
Date published: 29 July 2024

You asked

Dear Sir or Madam, What requirements does someone have to meet to become a London Underground driver? And where can you apply? Kind Regards

We answered

Our ref: FOI-1265-2425/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 19 July 2024 asking for information about the requirements to become a tube driver.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

We rarely advertise externally to recruit Train Operators. However, an avenue to become a Train Operator is via a Customer Services Assistant role (CSA) – there is currently a live advert on our TfL website – candidates generally undertake this role and subsequently apply for promotion to a Train operator after a certain period of time in the CSA role.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
