You asked

We are investigating the presence and any subsequent removal of asbestos materials within the London Underground, Golder’s Green train depot between the years of 1974 – 1981 or thereafter. We should be grateful if you could provide us with copies of all documents held in relation to the presence of asbestos and confirmation that this includes, but is not restricted to, asbestos surveys, analytical examinations, registers, reports and worksheets in respect of any asbestos removal or inspection carried out, as well as documents or plans relating to the material.

Thank you for your request received on 23 August 2022 asking for information about asbestos materials at Golders Green Train Depot.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you have requested. You asked for:

We are investigating the presence and any subsequent removal of asbestos materials within the London Underground, Golder’s Green train depot between the years of 1974 – 1981 or thereafter. We should be grateful if you could provide us with copies of all documents held in relation to the presence of asbestos and confirmation that this includes, but is not restricted to, asbestos surveys, analytical examinations, registers, reports and worksheets in respect of any asbestos removal or inspection carried out, as well as documents or plans relating to the material.

Due to the age of the Underground, asbestos is found in a number of locations on the network. However, in public areas the vast majority of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) are contained behind station finishes and cannot be accessed by the general public.

Asbestos-related records are only required to be kept for 40 years. Some of the information you have requested is older than this and is no longer held. With regard to more recent asbestos information, Alstom Transport UK Ltd is responsible for the management of ACMs and other hazardous materials at Golders Green depot and would hold information regarding this.

We do hold a large quantity of material relating to asbestos and fibre air monitoring across the network in our Corporate Archives, so you may wish to do a search of this online catalogue to determine whether they hold any information that you may be interested in:
