Request ID: FOI-1261-2122
Date published: 28 September 2021

You asked

Dear TFL FOI team Can you please tell me what the status is of these planned transport improvements in the Bermondsey area? • What is the timetable for the construction and opening of the New Bermondsey/Surrey Canal Road station, and where is the project currently on that timetable? • What is the schedule for the installation of a Cycle Hire docking station near South Bermondsey rail station, funding for which has been approved by Southwark Council? • Is any TFL funding being provided for Southwark council's plans for the Lower Road Gyratory and the Peckham-Rotherhithe cycle route? Is there any timetable attached to this? • When will the Mansell Street cycle lane scheme (essential for cycling between south and east London) be built?

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 15 September 2021 asking for information about planned transport improvements in Bermondsey.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. Your questions and our replies are as follows:

Can you please tell me what the status is of these planned transport improvements in the Bermondsey area?

  1. What is the timetable for the construction and opening of the New Bermondsey/Surrey Canal Road station, and where is the project currently on that timetable? We are currently in the concept design stage for the proposed new Surrey Canal Overground station. We will be concluding this design stage, and submitting an associated planning application, in the coming months. The next stages of the project are subject to confirmation of funding arrangements, so we can only provide these on an indicative basis, but we are currently planning to start the project’s detailed design stage in 2022, start on-site construction works in 2023, and open the new station in 2025.
  2. What is the schedule for the installation of a Cycle Hire docking station near South Bermondsey rail station, funding for which has been approved by Southwark Council? Design Work is currently being undertaken. A Planning application is to be submitted by late October.  We currently estimate that the station will be open in Spring. This assumes a successful planning application (which is beyond the control of TfL). The Borough has committed financially to the docking station near South Bermondsey Railway Station but is conditional on planning approval being obtained.
  3. Is any TFL funding being provided for Southwark council's plans for the Lower Road Gyratory and the Peckham-Rotherhithe cycle route? Is there any timetable attached to this? We still wish to be in a position to contribute towards the delivery of both the Lower Road section of Cycleway 4 and the Peckham to Rotherhithe cycleway; however due to our current financial situation we do not currently have a delivery timetable for either scheme.
  4. When will the Mansell Street cycle lane scheme (essential for cycling between south and east London) be built? We have been working closely with our contractor under TfL's new delivery framework to finalise the preparatory work for the Mansell Street scheme. Further survey work has revealed a number of unchartered utility plant which will require further investigation to ensure that we can proceed with works safety and avoid disruption to utility services. We are hoping to start construction in the new year, but we may encounter some delays due to these unexpected challenges, which will further delay the start. We are working closely with our contractors to confirm a start date and will communicate this as soon as we can. We are totally committed to delivering this scheme, as part of a programme of safer cycle infrastructure, as soon as it is possible in line with the Mayor’s commitments to deliver Healthy Streets and Vision Zero.
