Our ref: FOI-1234-2425/GH
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 16 July 2024 asking for information about speeding fines on the A297.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.
Per month, how many speeding fines were issued following camera activations along St Helier Avenue (A297) between 1 January 2024 and 15 July 2024?
Per month, how much money did this generate?
Of these fines, how many were successfully appealed?
Speeding fines are issued by the Metropolitan Police. We suggest you refer the questions above to them, as TfL do not hold information on the number of fines issued, revenue received and appeals.
How many complaints, if any, have been made in relation to the speed limit reduction to 30mph for the A297?
During the period01/01/2024 to 15/07/2024 we received six complaints in relation to the speed limit reduction; these all related to the signage.
What plans, if any, are there for improving the speed limit signage along the A297 to communicate the speed limit reduction?
The national urban speed limit is 30mph, which are indicated by virtue of the presence of a system of street lighting where lamps are placed not more than 200 yards (183 metres) apart. In accordance with Paragraph 8.3.1 of Traffic Signs Manual (Chapter 3 – Regulatory Signs), repeater signs are not permitted on a 30mph restricted road.
The signage for the 30mph speed limit reduction along St Helier Avenue is sufficient as the designs were produced in line with the Transport for London Signage Strategy for lower speed limits in London which is also read in accordance with other relevant local and national standards/guidance including Traffic Signs Manual, Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (2016) and Department for Transport's 'Setting Local Speed Limits'.
As such we have no plans to upgrade the speed limit signing along this section of the A297.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
