FOI request detail

Barriers on Bridges

Request ID: FOI-1228-1718
Date published: 11 September 2017

You asked

Can you please review the decision to place concrete barriers on Londons bridges, particularly Blackfriars bridge with a view to removing them. I believe these make safety worse for cyclists and in any case a terrorist would now simply chose another place to strike. Can you please also provide me with details on how the design decisions were made to place these barriers, copies of safety audits for the ones implemented and any design guidance you are using. Also list of any more bridges/roads you are proposing to put them?

We answered

Our Ref:         FOI-1228-1718

Thank you for your request received on 17 August 2017 asking for information about the concrete security barriers recently installed on some of London’s bridges.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and TfL’s information access policy.

Unfortunately we do not hold the information you have requested. The decision to place the barriers on the bridges was made by the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), not TfL. Therefore we believe you should make your request to the Security Coordinator Command at the MPS. They can be contacted via their website:

Please accept our apologies that we are unable to assist you further on this occasion.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
