Opening hours of Stratford new southwest entrance (onto Gibbins Road)

Request ID: FOI-1223-2425
Date published: 29 July 2024

You asked

I’d like to know what are the opening hours each day for the new Stratford station entrance onto Gibbins Road Secondly what is the policy on closing/opening it for events? is it closed for every event at the London stadium? are there other venues considered? Will it be closed only for specific hours during those events or the entire day? Thirdly, what is the rationale behind closing it for events (if that is the case as it appears to be). Was any analysis done to come to the conclusion it should be closed during events? If so what was that analysis? Lastly, how can residents of the Carpenters estate and buildings around it find out if the entrance is open or closed at any point?

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 15 July 2024 asking for information about the Stratford new southwest entrance (onto Gibbins Road).

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

The entrance opens at 05:00 every morning and closes at the following times throughout the week:

  • Monday – Thursday -  01:10hrs

  • Friday and Saturday – 01:00hrs

  • Sunday – 00:25hrs

The entrance is closed for Night Tube operations and closes as per the times above on Friday and Saturday, the Southern Entrance in Meridian Square is the entrance used for entering/exiting Stratford station for Night Tube.

The South Western Entrance also closes for a period of time on days where events are held within the London Stadium, the current Event Plan is very successful and enables us to deliver fans to and from the London Stadium using Montfitchet Road and Westfield Avenue with road closures in place throughout the period of the event to ensure the safety of all of our customers attending the stadium.

This route also has a stewarding provision in place across the route from the London Stadium to the Northern Ticket Hall at Stratford station which enables stop and hold measures to be implemented by stewards to assist the arrival profile of returning fans. From a safety perspective this is paramount given the number of platforms and services which operate through Stratford station and the number of fans who attend London Stadium events as well as the complexities within the wider station footprint.

The plan has been in operation since West Ham United took up residency within the London Stadium and works extremely well ensuring customer safety between the London Stadium and the transport Hub.

Gibbins Road and the wider Carpenters estate do not have road closures in place and London Stadium do not provide a stewarding arrangement to manage the arrival profile of returning fans to the South Western Entrance and therefore there is risk associated with the high number of returning fans to use this entrance as this could enable them to circumvent the existing Northern Ticket Hall route.

The South Western Entrance will close for the duration the station is in Event Mode which is between 2 – 3 hours prior to the event start time within the stadium depending on the number of attendees and the category of the fixture.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
