Our ref: FOI-1193-2425/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 12 July 2024 asking for information about Canning Town bus station.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.

  1. What are the latest plans in this regard to fix the look of Canning Town bus station which has been a look of a construction site for nearly 2 years now?
2. Are there repairs planned for Canning Town bus station ceiling post the July 2021 incident?
Concept Design and Testing have been completed. The next stage is Detailed Design which we are in the process of instructing. The Detailed Design stage will involve refining architectural and engineering plans, consider practical aspects and ensure alignment with safety standards while aiming to enhance the bus station’s aesthetics and functionality.
The delivery stage of the project is currently not budgeted in this financial year. In October, we will be seeking additional funding to progress the delivery and will be able to confirm delivery timescales following that. While we await the decision to proceed, material procurement remains pending.
 3.  When  will  station  get  back  to  its  former  clean  look  with  all  temporary  support fixtures chosen.
Once budgetary approvals are in place, we intend to commence construction promptly. However, any construction timeline is contingent upon financial allocations. We are committed to transforming the bus station from its current appearance into a welcoming and functional space for passengers, bus drivers and TfL staff.

4. What is estimated cost if these repairs and is Newham or TFL able to claim these from insurers or the construction firm who built the ceiling?
The current estimate for the repair work, including necessary contingencies, falls within the range £1.6 million to £2.1 million. These repair costs are not recoverable due to the age of the building which is over 20 years old and out of warranty. However, we remain committed to managing the project efficiently within the estimated budget.

5.  What decisions have been taken post the  feasibility  study  that  was  due  to  be  completed  by  November 2022 in this regard? If any further studies or reports have been generated please provide these.
The feasibility study was reviewed by TfL Architects in the Built Environment Engineering Team, who carried out an independent review, assessment of the incident and provided a Technical Requirements Specification for this project. Since then, the Concept Design has been finalised and Technical Approval Authority has been achieved for the proposed option. Rigorous off-site testing has validated the feasibility of our chosen approach. We are now prepared to move forward with the Detailed Design stage. Material procurement and construction are contingent upon securing funding. No additional formal reports have been generated beyond the feasibility study. Should any further studies or relevant updates arise, we will promptly share them with stakeholders.

6.  Please provide any relevant  correspondence with Newham Council in  regards to repair work / plans to fix the current situation
We have carried out an emails search for any relevant correspondence, but our search found no correspondence with LB Newham on this subject. The project is still in the design stage. We would not expect there to be any communications with the borough until we move to the build phase of the project.

7. Please provide any internal plans / timelines for the repair project.
These are the current timelines, with material procurement and build contingent on funding becoming available.

  1. Detailed Design: September 2024 to January 2025
  2. Material Procurement and Construction: Delivery timelines to be confirmed once the funding decision is made in October
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
