CALCULATION OF PAYMENT CHARGES FOR THE USAGE OF SANTANDER
BICYCLES
1. After payment of the hiring fee to hire a Santander bicycle with TFL, how are further
charges calculated?
2. In particular, do any further costs regarding the use of Santander bicycles relate to the
riding of the bicycle by using the pedals, or are the charges based on wheel revolutions?
3. How are the charges recorded electronically on the Santander bicycles?

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 25 September 2020 asking for information about Santander Cycles.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.
1. After payment of the hiring fee to hire a Santander bicycle with TFL, how are further charges calculated?
After the initial access fee customers are charged £2 for each 30 minute period the bike is undocked. A summary of hire fees is available on our website

No.
3. How are the charges recorded electronically on the Santander bicycles?
Each bike has an RFID chip which registers when the bike is docked and calculates how long the bike has been on hire.
