Mayor's vision for cycling 2013

Request ID: FOI-1174-1718

You asked

The previous Mayors cycling vision (content.tfl.gov.uk/gla-mayors-cycle-vision-2013.pdf) contained these targets:- "We will deliver 80,000 additional cycle parking spaces in residential locations, stations, workplaces and other trip destinations by 2016. We will put them where people most need them, above all in central London. Subject to planning and land issues, we will create a Dutch-style cycle superhub in at least one central London mainline rail terminus, with storage for thousands of bikes, good security and very good cycle routes radiating from it. We expect and will help Network Rail to play their part in delivering it. It will also have London’s largest Barclays Cycle Hire docking station, with at least several hundred hire bikes. We want thousands of commuters to switch to bikes for the last stage of their journeys to work, significantly relieving pressure on the Tube and bus networks in central London. A trial of the latest all-terrain, full-suspension electric mountain bikes with the Metropolitan Police. These bikes go over rough ground faster than a normal bike goes over tarmac, and also climb stairs. With criminals increasingly using (ordinary) bikes, e-bikes will keep the police one step ahead. An e-bike trial with a high-profile company whose staff are seen moving around the streets a lot, perhaps a courier firm or an estate agent. 1) Please can you let me have the number of cycle parking spaces delivered by each local authority (numbers per year identified, per borough) and those delivered by TfL (numbers per year identified, per borough). 2) What progress has been made in delivering a "Dutch-style cycle superhub". 3) How many "all-terrain, full-suspension electric mountain bikes" were trialed by the Met Police and when will the trial results be published. 4) When will the results of the "e-bike trial with a high-profile company" be published.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 14 August 2017 asking for information about cycling.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.

1) Please can you let me have the number of cycle parking spaces delivered by each local authority (numbers per year identified, per borough) and those delivered by TfL (numbers per year identified, per borough).

This information is not currently held.

As the ways cycle parking is delivered in London are so varied, TfL cannot accurately track overall cycle parking numbers as it is delivered, but existing cycle parking is now being captured across London as part of the London-wide audit of cycling routes and cycle infrastructure taking place this year.

This audit will enable TfL, and others who can share this data when it becomes available, to tell people where they can find cycle parking across the Capital. It will also help to identify gaps in cycle parking provision for future resources to be targeted effectively.

2) What progress has been made in delivering a "Dutch-style cycle superhub".

There is no work currently underway to investigate the feasibility of  a Dutch-style cycle superhub, but Cycle Parks at Hounslow West and North Greenwich railway stations were delivered in 2016. TfL also continues to work with the national Cycle Rail working group to investigate opportunities for future rail-based hubs. In addition, TfL is focusing on integrating cycle parking with the London Underground network as part of TfL’s overall approach to delivering Healthy Streets.

3) How many "all-terrain, full-suspension electric mountain bikes" were trialed by the Met Police and when will the trial results be published.

The Met Police, through the Safer Transport Teams, trialled 14 e-bikes from four different manufacturers. No e-bikes were purchased following the trial. No formal results from the trial will be published.

4) When will the results of the "e-bike trial with a high-profile company" be published.

The e-bike trial with a high profile company has not yet taken place, although enabling companies to trial e-bikes remains part of our plans to encourage the use of e-bikes in London in order to increase the number and range of people cycling.
