FOI request detail

Hanwell services

Request ID: FOI-1148-2324
Date published: 08 August 2023

You asked

The Elizabeth line currently runs a service of 4 trains per hour to Hanwell in each direction. In particular, i note that the trains that go from Paddington to Reading and vice versa do not stop at this station. There is talk about increasing frequency as the remaining phases of the Elizabeth line are completed. I am looking for information about (a) the frequency of service that is planned once Phase 2 of the Elizabeth Line is completed by May but we are in June and there is a lack of customer service in West area which is quite disappointing. As a result, the trains are always full and it was quite odd that a tube service runs only every 15min! Could you please have a caring look to this area?

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 12 July 2023 asking for information about the frequency of Elizabeth Line trains stopping at Hanwell Station.

The Elizabeth line has been truly transformational. Since opening in May 2022, weekday traffic has grown to around 600,000 journeys a day. On 1 February 2023, we reached 100 million journeys. The Elizabeth line, which is a train service, rather than a Tube line, as referenced above, has also provided us with a very significant increase in capacity, with new and refurbished stations and seventy nine-carriage trains, each capable of carrying over 1,500 customers.

On 21 May 2023, we introduced improvements to the Elizabeth line timetable resulting in improvements to journey times for customers travelling from Hanwell through to Central London.

For services towards Reading, customers at Hanwell should take the first train towards Heathrow and change at Hayes & Harlington for the next westbound service to Maidenhead or Reading.

We keep our timetables under review and update them as required to best meet passenger demand, improve journey quality and service reliability. We will continue to do this with the Elizabeth line services to ensure the best service possible for our customers.
