A2, average speed cameras Blackwall Tunnel and Dartford Heath
Request ID: FOI-1128-2425 Date published: 22 July 2024
You asked
Can you confirm if the average speed is enforced between cameras or across the entire zone of cameras - i.e. if I drive the length of this average speed zone and, say, exceed 50mph between 2 cameras but then between the next 2 average 40mph would my average speed be measured across the total distance I travelled on the road or would I be penalised if I exceed 50mph between any 2 cameras?

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 6 July 2024 asking for information about average speed cameras.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.
The average speed cameras operate as links (between entry and exit cameras) an example below -
Link 1 – Entry Camera 1 to Exit Camera 1 Link 2 – Entry Camera 2 to Exit Camera 2 Link 3 – Entry Camera 3 to Exit Camera 3
These single links can also be used to measure over a greater distance in the following way -
Link 4 – Entry Camera 1 to Exit Camera 2 Link 5 – Entry Camera 1 to Exit Camera 3 Link 6 – Entry Camera 2 to Exit Camera 3
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
