FOI request detail

Release of speed travelled data for buses 341 and 141 as they travel between Clissold Park and Manor House junction in N4

Request ID: FOI-1117-2021
Date published: 15 October 2020

You asked

Buses 141 and 341 frequently break the 20 mile an hour speed limit when driving past my family's home on the A105 Green Lanes. Do you hold the GPS tracking data, including speed reached, for the buses 141 and 341? I'm particularly interested in the stretch of road outside my house for now. If you do hold this data (over the last year) please can you release it to me under the FOI Act. I understand you are busy and do not wish to deal with FOI requests just now. I wouldn't be making this request if your buses 141 and 341 didn't clearly break the speed limit daily.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-1117-2021

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 19 September 2020.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked;

Please find the attached file which lists all recorded occasions from October 2019 up to the end of September 2020 where speed events (defined as being 10% +2mph or more above the road speed) were registered on bus routes 141 and 341 on the section of Green Lanes, between Seven Sisters Road and Riversdale Road.

Please note the indicative data we use is designed for speed compliance assurance rather than enforcement purposes. The method of measurement picks out the location of the bus to within a 10m stretch of road, rather than gives an exact speed between two pre-set highway points, which can lead to fluctuating speeds being registered. Throughout this capture time, there were approximately 176,000 trips operated on the aforementioned bus routes.

As part of our Vision Zero ambition for no one to be killed in or by a London bus by 2030, we recognise the important role that safe speeds play in achieving this, which is why we are investing in technologies such as Intelligent Speed Assistance to help limit the speed of buses. As a result of your request, we have reminded the operator of these routes and the importance of ensuring buses are operated within the speed limit. The operational team is now aware of the concerns and has committed to take action to ensure staff adhere to the speed limit. We will also arrange for some unannounced to carry out speed monitoring on this section of the road as a follow-up assurance check.

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
