Traffic changes resulting from Hammersmith Bridge changes

I'd like to see some data showing the changes in traffic behaviour since the closure of Hammersmith Bridge to motor traffic. In particular I'm interested in the changes on the A205 between (roughly) Kew Bridge and Putney Bridge, and the A316 between Richmond and Hogarth Lane. I don't know exactly what data sets are easily available to your team, but I'm interested in: - Do we know how traffic volumes have changes on these main roads? - Do we know if traffic speeds have generally changed on these roads? - What changes can be observed in the bus services whose routes haven't changed?

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 12 July 2019 asking for information about traffic changes resulting from Hammersmith Bridge changes.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.

Please find attached a document which provides the data you have requested on traffic flow and journey times since Hammersmith Bridge has closed, compared to the period before the bridge was closed. This covers the key routes that we are monitoring in your area of interest.

On slide one of the attached document, the (+) boxes show increases to the number of vehicles and the (-) boxes show decreases. Slide two has information on changes to journey times.  The data on slides one and two does not include cycles. Slide 3 has information on bus journey times and slide 4 explains more on how we collect data.

Signal timing changes have been made on a regional basis – to make sure that timing changes in one location do not have unintended consequences elsewhere.

One of the most challenging locations has been Chalkers Corner where the A316 meets the A205 Upper Richmond Road, and A3003 Lower Richmond Road. We are using the traffic signals to hold traffic at the top of the A3 at Robin Hood Roundabout to help us manage areas that are at risk of excessive congestion by restricting the flow towards them, although at present traffic levels are lower due to the school holiday period.

Also, we have made changes to signal timings to assist traffic in congested areas – for example traffic that has been diverted towards Chiswick Bridge and Putney Bridges, as well as Hogarth Roundabout, to manage the traffic south towards Chiswick bridge, the signals along Fulham Palace Road and Hammersmith Gyratory; which is currently under review from our traffic signals team.

We continue to keep the whole area under review, and will respond wherever possible to any emerging traffic conditions which are resulting in excessive congestion or causing serious delays to buses.
