We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-1097-2021

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 16th September 2020 asking for information about ex- London Underground diesel hydraulic locomotive DL-83.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

I request the UNIT LOG for ex-London Underground diesel hydraulic shunting locomotive DL-83 (Sentinel 10271), used at Lillie Bridge.”.

On 23rd September you clarified that the request is for a copy of the contents of the log book.

So far as I have been able to ascertain TfL does not hold the information requested. However, note that I have not been able to establish this categorically as the London Transport Museum library (one potential source for the information - albeit unlikely) is currently closed with the staff on furlough.

Notwithstanding the above, I have been able to find the following information in relation to your request after liaison with colleagues in London Underground. A review of the available public literature states that there were three Sentinel Diesel locomotives purchased by London Transport in 1971 – numbered DL81, DL82 and DL83. These appear to have been sold in, or around, 1993 (seven years prior to the establishment of Transport for London). Generally speaking rolling stock official records are only kept for the life of the rolling stock plus a further seven years. It is likely that London Transport passed on most, if not all, documentation to the new owners.

I also put your request to colleagues in our Corporate Archives team. They tell me that they have been unable to find a log book for the DL83 diesel locomotive but they have found other material that may be of interest - shown in the attached spreadsheet (you may need to expand the width of some columns to read the data in full). Note that the catalogue was searched for the terms DL83, DL-83, DL 83, DL/83, but returned no results.

All archived material listed in the attachment are physical items. Researcher access to them would usually be via our search room at Endeavour Square, Stratford, London. However, due to the current situation with Covid-19 the search room will not be open before 2021. The Archive staff are also working from home and have not had access to any of their physical collections since March, so I am afraid that we are unable to offer a research or copying service as an alternative solution.

If there is anything you would be interested in seeing the Archive team can add your details to their list of contacts and will make contact once we have a re-opening date. Please let me know if that is of any interest to you.

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,

David Wells
