We answered

Our Ref:         FOI-1091-2122

Thank you for your request received on 25 August 2021 asking for information about advertisements placed by gambling companies.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You asked for:

•           The number of adverts placed by gambling companies on TfL services during each quarter of each year since 2017. If possible, the information should be broken down by these categories and by the type of service on which the adverts were placed (e.g. London Underground, bus network etc)
•           The value of advert space bought by gambling companies on TfL services during each quarter of each year since 2017. Please apply the same criteria as for the first question.

Our media partners classify advertising sales into a range of pre-defined categories using the sales representative’s best judgement based upon the copy to be shown in the advertisement. Please note that the figures provided above is the gross figure received, it is not what TfL receives from these campaigns. Due to the way this information is currently held, we are not able to break these figures down into quarters.

Please note that our advertising partners do not keep images on file so they would only be able to review the booking names. In some instances it may not be obvious from the company name what the type of business is so it would not be possible to say if it would be for betting firms, high street bingo, lotteries etc.

We are not able to provide you information prior to 2018-19 as our advertising partner does not hold sufficient data to provide the requested information.

If this is not the information you are looking for please feel free to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
