Days lost to industrial action
Request ID: FOI-1091-1920
Date published: 08 August 2019
You asked
In the last ten financial years (2018-19, 2017-18, 2016-17, 2015-16, 2014-15, 2013-14, 2012-13, 2011-12, 2010-11 and 2009-10) how many times has industrial strike action been taken on the Transport for London network?
Can I please have a breakdown by each financial year in the amount of times/or the dates industrial strike action has been taken and by which trade union?
Can the information please be displayed in a spreadsheet file?
Many thanks in advance

TfL Ref: FOI-1091-1920
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 15th July 2019 asking for information about industrial action on the TfL network over the last 10 years.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“In the last ten financial years (2018-19, 2017-18, 2016-17, 2015-16, 2014-15, 2013-14, 2012-13, 2011-12, 2010-11 and 2009-10) how many times has industrial strike action been taken on the Transport for London network?
Can I please have a breakdown by each financial year in the amount of times/or the dates industrial strike action has been taken and by which trade union?”.
I can confirm that we hold the information you require, which is shown in the table below. Note that the data relates only to those transport modes which TfL operates directly (such as the London Underground), and hence does not include services operated by third parties (such as the London Overground).
The impact of any strike action taken varies and is dependent on the nature of the dispute, the number of unions involved and where the strike has been called. Therefore the impact of the strikes listed below vary from affecting, for example, the whole Tube network to localised action affecting only part of the network.
We encourage Unions to engage in discussions to resolve any disputes that may result in industrial action. When it has not been possible to prevent industrial action we enact well prepared operational plans to ensure that services operate safely at all times under busier than normal conditions. We deploy additional staff (including managers and revenue control staff) to assist local staff and provide advice to customers. We also issue communications to inform customers that services will be busier than usual. Extra services on alternative modes are operated to help people get around, and we continue to update the TfL website as well as our other social media outlets which we encourage our customers to check frequently to see how their journeys could be affected.
