Please inform me of (a) the reason why the Rotherhithe Tunnel was closed around lunchtime on Friday 16 June 2023 (b) whether that closure had been announced in advance and, if so, where and (c) how in general can one check whether the tunnel is open in advance of travelling there (please provide specific websites etc.).

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked:
Please inform me of (a) the reason why the Rotherhithe Tunnel was closed around lunchtime on Friday 16 June 2023 (b) whether that closure had been announced in advance and, if so, where and (c) how in general can one check whether the tunnel is open in advance of travelling there (please provide specific websites etc.).
Our records show the tunnel was closed between approximately 01:30 & 13:16 on 16 June 2023 due to a collision in the tunnel. As this was not a planned closure it could not have been announced in advance.
Information about the tunnel closure was published on the TfL website and data regarding the closure was shared with satellite navigation and media companies. There were also variable message signs set publicising the closure.
You can check on the TfL website at https://tfl.gov.uk/traffic/status/ for road closures and planned works. You can also register for email updates and advanced warnings of road closures.
