TfL Ref: FOI-1070-2223
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 2 August 2022, asking for information about graduate campaigns.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked:
Would you please provide info for this year campaign (2022) and previous years Graduate campaigns?
Please see the information we hold in the tables below. Campaigns data for previous years is no longer available. There is also a gap in 2020 when no Graduate scheme was run.
1) Percentage of successful applicants for each group age? (20's, 30's, 40's, etc)
2) Total number of successful applicants for each group age? (20's, 30's, 40's, etc)
| 2018 | 2019 | 2021 |
Age Group | Offers | % of All Offers by Age Group | Offers | % of All Offers by Age Group | Offers | % of All Offers by Age Group |

20-29 | 27 | 93.1% | 46 | 97.9% | 52 | 86.7% |
30-39 | Redacted | 3.4% | 1 | 2.1% | 3 | 5.0% |
40-49 | 0 | 0.0% | 0 | 0.0% | 0 | 0.0% |

3) From the initial pool of applications to the scheme, what percentage belong to each group category ?
| 2018 | 2019 | 2021 |
Under 20 | | 4.8% | | 1.0% | | 0.2% |
20-29 | | 66.6% | | 66.3% | | 77.7% |
30-39 | | 6.4% | | 6.9% | | 5.5% |
40-49 | | 1.7% | | 2.4% | | 1.4% |
Over 50 | | 0.3% | | 0.5% | | 0.2% |
Not Specified | | 18.1% | | 21.4% | | 13.6% |

4) How each age group performs in relation of number of successful applicants( especially those belonging to the 30-40 yrs old group and 40 and above year group). For example, a possible answer could be: 50% of the applicants to the scheme belong to the 20's years old age group and represents 40% of the final job offers.
Please see the table below;
| 2018 | 2019 | 2021 |
Age Group | % Applicants | % Offers | % Applicants | % Offers | % Applicants | % Offers |
Under 20 | 4.8% | Redacted | 1.0% | 0.0% | 0.2% | 0.0% |
20-29 | 66.6% | 93.1% | 66.3% | 97.9% | 77.7% | 86.7% |
30-39 | 6.4% | Redacted | 6.9% | Redacted | 5.5% | Redacted |
40-49 | 1.7% | 0.0% | 2.4% | 0.0% | 1.4% | 0.0% |
Over 50 | 0.3% | 0.0% | 0.5% | 0.0% | 0.2% | 0.0% |
Not Specified | 18.1% | 0.0% | 21.4% | 0.0% | 13.6% | 3.3% |
Prefer not to say | 2.1% | 0.0% | 1.5% | 0.0% | 1.5% | 5.0% |
However, from this data it’s not possible to accurately compare those percentages (e.g. x percent of applicants are from y age group, and x percent of offers are from y age group). Therefore, I have included the below data which shows what % of applicants within that age group got offered roles, and how that compares to other age groups.
| Percentage of Applicants by age group who are offered placements |
Age Group | 2018 | 2018 | 2019 | 2019 | 2021 | 2021 |
Under 20 | | Redacted | | 0.0% | | 0.0% |
20-29 | | 0.9% | | 1.3% | | 0.7% |
30-39 | | Redacted | | Redacted | | Redacted |
40-49 | | 0.0% | | 0.0% | | 0.0% |
Over 50 | | 0.0% | | 0.0% | | 0.0% |
Not Specified | | 0.0% | | 0.0% | | 0.1% |
Prefer not to say | | 0.0% | | 0.0% | | 1.9% |
There is only a small number of placements available for the number of applicants (all success rates are lower than 2% with most being lower than 1%). The below table is added for context;
| 2018 | 2019 | 2021 |
Applicants | 10,188 | | 11,638 | | 20,100 | |
Offers | 58 | | 94 | | 120 | |
Success rate | | 0.6% | | 0.8% | | 0.6% |
Because of the small number of people in some categories, we have taken the decision to withhold this information to avoid it being linked to a specific individual. It would be likely that specific individuals could be identified from this information and therefore constitute personal data.
This is exempt from disclosure under section 40(2) of the FOI Act as disclosure of the exact figures would be a breach of the legislation, specifically the first principle of Article 5 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which requires personal data to be processed lawfully, fairly and transparently. These individuals would have a reasonable expectation that the information we hold about them would not be disclosed in a manner that would identify any particular person and it would be unfair to them to do so. This exemption to the right of access to information is an absolute exemption and not subject to an assessment of whether the public interest favours use of the exemption.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
